I wish AnonyMaker would have inquired into who Swami Nithyananda is properly. Swami Nithyananda is as real as they come.

I was avoiding getting into His details as it would be a distraction. And doesn’t add any value to the analysis of the cases.

Hope some of this info can help you. All of it can be verified independently as well using independent sources.

First you have to understand “Akhada Parishad” in the context of Hinduism.

Akhada Parishad is a democratic body of Sanyasis from 1000s of Hindu traditions.

It’s not a hierarchy, it’s more like a peer body organized around spiritual traditions.

It’s given as a recognition of Spiritual achievement by other Sanyasis [swamis].

But they do have few responsibilities which are decided democratically for 1000s of years. One of them is organizing KumbhMela. No other body in Hinduism can organize it. Even Dalai Lama attends KumbhMela.

If I am not mistaken for over a 1000 years no none has been a head of 2 Peethas within Akhada Hindu Parishad. It’s a recognition of his mastery over multiple spiritual traditions.

Atal Akhada Peetadeeshwar Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Sukhdevanandji declared that Swami Nithyananda is going to be the next Acharya of the Atal Peeta. The older Swami said of Nithyananda that Nithyananda is “Worthy of supreme reverence. Worthy of remembering at dawn….. Sri Nithyananda Maharaja, whom we highly revere, blessed is the mother who has given birth to the great being, blessed is that father, and land which has given birth to such divine beings.”

Lot of teachings in Hinduism are based on poems, metaphoric, sentiments – arts etc, possibilities, abstract thoughts etc. Incarnation in Hinduism is very different from what is understood by others, for e.g. Hindus consider Dalai Lama as an Incarnation along with many other Rinpoches.

Jesus is considered by many Hindus as an incarnation of God.

Outsiders of these traditions will have a very tough time understanding it unless you spend time really understanding it.

Nithyananda’s followers believe he is an incarnation of God.

Essence of the links below: He is recognized by all mainstream and ancient traditions (monks and married) as not just legitimate but also spiritually very evolved.

These traditions represent at least 500,000 Sanyasis and 100s of millions of followers.

In many traditions of Hinduism, Gurus are married as well. In fact, many of Swami Nithyananda’s Gurus were married and had children, grandchildren etc.

The sub-tradition of Swami Nithyananda doesn’t need him to be married.

And also Swami Nithyananda is the only Hindu Guru (from 100s of recognized spiritual heads) authorized to conduct KumbhMela outside of India by Akhada Parishad.

KumbhMela is meant for all traditions of Hindus not just His followers.

KumbhMela is the most auspicious gathering of Hindus running into over 100 million.

Even by government estimates (which are usually heavily under-estimated) its about 60-70 million [in attendance].

In a gathering of this scale, Swami Nithyananda’s “tent” is the most visited one by a very large margin. Many of the Akhada Parishad Sanyasis have openly said it.

His followers suggest this is an excellent argument against Aathi Rao’s claim she was raped dozens of time {unprotected] over five years.]

The real story is the media in India.

For e.g. The noise created by media forced Ecuador to disclose protected information as per UN refugee law.

Following his rape criminal case, Nithyananda reportedly went to Ecuador to get asylum and was refused.

According to many international bodies.

Media in India is trusted much less than the government.

I am taking about a country with cradle to grave corruption in government bodies which spares none.

We seem to have a response from a real true believer/apologist type, if not posssibly even a member of Nithyananda's PR staff, to evaluate. In India almost more than the US, claims of large followings are pronounced as if they somehow legitimize the guru and the group, which is a fallacy to begin with. The site at the link provided by the author reminds me of Scientology propaganda, which attempts to inflate a membership known to be only a few tens of thousands, into tens of millions. On quick review it appears they are engaged in typical lying by statistics, such as claiming every YouTube view as a member, though like Scientology they do it by throwing all sorts of big numbers, impressive-looking graphs at readers, apparently hoping no one will pay close attention or ask hard questions. They claim over half a billion YouTube and online followers, and yet a fact-check shows that the Swami's YouTube channel has only 224K subscribers and his Facebook page only has about a million likes, numbers that both don't even represent dedicated adherents and that are also subject to being inflated by paid-for fake followers (India is one of the world's homes of “click farms” including ones exposed as being used by Scientology). As far as “independent sources,” I've searched high and low for lists of India's most popular gurus or those with the largest followings, and can't find Nithyananda on any of them; Indian media accounts that turn up, refer to “thousands” of followers. Nithyanand is facing a rape case in Karnataka, filed in 2009. He also faces seven cases of fraud against his foundation, which bears his name, in India and the United States. “Nithyanand’s name was raised by Hari Giri but the proposal was fiercely opposed by representatives of Mahanirvani Akhara,” said Dharam Das, the chief abbot of Nirvani Akhara, who attended the meeting in Allahabad where the list was drawn up. Hari Giri leads Juna Akhara. The All India Akhara Parishad is a conglomerate of 13 akharas, or militant ascetic orders – seven of Shaiva persuasion, three each of Vaishnavism’s Ramanandi sect and Sikhism. The Parishad’s “fake babas” list is aimed at restoring the credibility of sadhus after the arrest of several self-styled godmen on criminal charges, most recently Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh of Dera Sacha Sauda. Singh is on the blacklist, along with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh member Aseemanand, Asaram and his son Narayan Sai, Radhe Ma, Sachidanand Giri and Nirmal Baba. Nithyanand, though, escaped sanction. “Despite Mahanirvani’s objection, the case of Nithyanand was discussed in detail at the meeting,” Dharam Das said. “But since Mahanirvani’s representatives were not ready to listen to any argument we decided not to put his name on the list of fake babas.” Nithyanand was anointed Mahamandaleshwar, or high priest, by Mahanirvani Akhara at the Allahabad Kumbh in 2013. The decision had drawn severe criticism from other akharas, which alleged that he had bought the title with “secret guru dakshina donations” to the akhara. Such was their indignation that the Niranjani and Juna akharas organised an open meeting of sadhus and devotees attending the Kumbh to denounce the grant of the coveted title to Nithyananda, who is believed to be one of the world’s richest sadhus. His omission from the blacklist has not gone down well with many sadhus. “The Akhara Parishad’s decision to exclude Nithyanand from the list of fake babas signifies that it is not serious about taking concrete steps to salvage the image of the ascetic community,” said Baba Hathyogi, a prominent sadhu from Haridwar who belongs to the Digambari Akhara. Satyendra Das, a member of the Nirvani Akhara and chief priest of the Ramjanmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya complained: “Akharas tie their hands the moment they take money for granting titles. The practice is so widespread that they are simply not in a position to launch a rectification drive.” Satyendra Das went so far as to question the credibility of the Parishad’s leaders: “Many are themselves sadhus only in name. How can they cleanse the system?” His allegations are not unfounded. The Parishad’s president Narendra Giri of the Niranjani Akhara was instrumental in getting Sachidanand Giri, a realtor who owned a bar in Noida, anointed as the chief priest in 2015, while the Juna Akhara’s Hari Giri went out of his way to consecrate Radhe Ma as the high priestess of his akhara in 2012. You are assuming all reporting/media in India in English. And all reporting happens online. Most English content is limited to 6-10 cities in India. It's not even close by a long shot. There about 125-140M english speaker across the country (not all consume English content) at most from a population of around 1.2 – 1.3 billion. All this is irrelevant and serves no purpose. It isn't about him either. I am not saying he is, but for the sake of argument I am willing to concede it's a cult. Even if he allegedly a cult head and not desirable. I could be a PR or an ardent. Why should it matter when trying to figure out the truth objectively? Can we design a method where individual motivations don't matter ? Isn't he eligible to be treated according to law and basic informed logic before arriving at a conclusion? Shouldn't he be judged fairly based on evidence impartially? So far I am hopeful on this group here as I see you trying to de-clutter through a barrage of Information in-spite of having a POV. It all comes down to if he has raped Aarthi Rao? Does Aarthi Rao have contagious STDs for the entire duration of alleged rape period of 5 years? Is he impotent incapable of libido to either gender? What data can we rely on? How do we authenticate? If either one of them are true does it mean he is a rapist ? What if both are true? If both of them are true. What role has media played ? Did media get played ? If so, who played them ? Or did media make a play ? I am betting on the data available with the police and court system in Michigan. How do we get it without compromising on the authenticity ? Almost all Indian media as access to this data. Even the Indian courts have access to that data. It took 6 years of legal battle to get it accepted. Akhil Kodali- Who are you employed by sir? A religious leader having many adherents is not necessarily a testament to piety. How many charities does Nithyananda run? Does Nithyananda feed and clothe the poor? Does he run free medical clinics? Why do I suspect the last three of my questions will go unanswered? 🙂

Its a volunteer driven group. How about 1 billion free meals ? Flood/cyclone relief Free medical camps in under-served poor and rural areas. Free freshly cooked organic food for anyone(need not be a follower) who enters the ashram (all ashrams have in house kitchen) Free residential schools (not a penny taken from parents for anything including food, clothing, books, staff, healthcare etc). Free 100,000s from allergy, auto-immune disorders, cancers, arthritis, eating disorder, diabetes and other serious ailments. Free counseling for those who need it esp where mental health services are non-existent or not affordable

I wrote a longer comment debunking a number of the claims in this post, but here's a quick fact check: On their website linked above they claim “Number of followers in YouTube : 580 million” On the official YouTube channel it shows “Nithyananda 224K subscribers” with individual recent videos showing views just in the thousands to tens of thousands. The actual 224K is .5% (1/2000th) of the 580m claimed. Not only does the number of people following the YouTube channel not even necessarily represent actual dedicated followers of the swami, but they've gone so far as to count every single view of a NIthyananda video as a “follower.” Virtual pathological liars, just like L. Ron Hubbard and his followers in Scientology, indeed. The very mark of a cult.

Another useful type of reality- and fact-check I've found for groups like this, and their claims, is to drill down into their local locations and membership and try to ascertain the actual state of affairs for one or more examples – and gauge how honest they're being in their reporting. Nithyananda is India-based, but I'm going to assume that looking into his supposed largest following in the US will still be telling. At a link provided in the post, the claim is made “Religious Congregation….Kumbh Mela USA 2015 Los Angeles, USA 0.015 ['Million Followers', or 15,000]” The cult is resorting to what appears to be a typical tactic of claiming as “followers” all the people who just attended a Hindu event where many groups and gurus were represented. It turns out to have been held on the grounds of a high school, and not to have gotten past the planning stages for the next year, or to have ever taken place again – so much for Nithyananda's pull. Even if all these claims of a vast following are true, this has absolutely nothing to do with the allegations of abuse. If there ever was an Indian guru with a vast international following, this would have been Sai Baba, who died in 2011. He is still widely venerated. I knew a Sai follower who personally witnessed the following in India. A representative from a Sai congregation was telling Sai Baba about their new temple. Sai Baba asked if there was anything needed to complete it. The man said, “A gold statue of Krishna would be wonderful” — so Sai Baba waved his hands, and hey prestissimo, there was a gold statue of Krishna. Now, we're talking about real gold here, Sai Baba was once accused of flouting the precious metals laws in India by handling so much gold; the Indian government ruled (as I recall) that this gold was produced supernaturally, and was therefore not subject to government regulations. How difficult is it, to whisper to a devotee to ask for a gold statue of Krishna? And if you know the question is coming, to have this artifact hidden up your saffron sleeve? And if you are running a gold-smuggling syndicate, to have a veneer of gold put on a statue to fool the masses? Here is another story I was told. A Canadian was at the Sai ashram, and ran out of film for his camera. He had an audience with the guru and told him about the lack of film and how he wanted a picture. Sai Baba clicked his fingers, and next thing was holding the exact film required, saying he got it from the man's regular camera shop in Canada. According to the story I was told, when the guy got back to Canada, the camera store manager described this Indian man with saffron robes and an Afro hairdo who came in on a certain day and bought this film. The time and date were the same as Sai Baba's manifestation. A miracle! If you are running an international fraud syndicate, and it's important to fool international visitors (just assuming that this story is true): exactly how hard is it for a Sai devotee in Canada to put on a wig and pull off a hoax? If you have an insider, a friend of the “mark”, who knows (a) that this guy has run out of a particular type of film; (b) that he is seeing Sai the day after tomorrow at a particular time and will want a picture, may even have talked about this; (c) exactly where the guy buys his film in Canada — this is a trivial trick to pull off, yet it will absolutely stun and astound the credulous. Many magic tricks work with the collaboration of an insider. I knew Sai devotees outside India who would describe how holy ash would mysteriously appear in the night at the foot of a picture of Sai Baba. All it takes is one insider in the house to do the deed, keep it secret, and like Santa Claus, you have a miracle in the morning. Sai Baba was always magically producing this ash, which on analysis was mostly dried cow dung, as I remember. One thing I believe for sure: Sai Baba knew what he was doing with his sexual tricks, and there's no doubt that he had certain powers. One story I was told first-hand by the protagonist, which was witnessed by many, and which I have no reason to doubt, went like this. This woman, who was a friend of mine (I worked with her husband, who witnessed and confirmed this story) went to the Sai ashram for the first time, and the very first time she saw Sai Baba, she was so excited that she ran up to him and touched him. She said she immediately fell to the floor convulsing. She recovered after a little while, and was then told: you must *never* touch Sai Baba, his energy is so high that unless you are prepared for it, you will get a shock. Now, you also get this kind of thing in charismatic churches — some of it may be outright hoax, but there really is something to “kundalini energy”, and adepts do warn people not to touch them, not to shake their hands. We've seen and heard this all before. Sai Baba said he was God, period. His devotees believed him, still believe him. Yet he came and went, and very little has changed on this planet. I am personally pretty certain that we are about to see a major manifestation of this kind of thing on our increasingly hysterical planet, a really *really* big god-man emerging, perhaps with holograms in the sky and booming words reverberating out of mountains.
